Wooden floor: painting or varnishing

A wooden floor is an environmentally friendly coating that helps maintain an optimal microclimate in the room. Wooden floors are more durable than synthetic flooring.

But the floors of wood need protection. If you do not subject them to special treatment, then the tree very quickly begins to rot, fill with harmful microorganisms and deform.

We will tell you how to paint or varnishing the wooden floor to prolong its life and improve the aesthetic effect.

Choose the material for floor painting

It’s no secret that all paint and varnish materials are divided in appearance into opaque and transparent.

1. Transparent – it’s varnishes and impregnations. In some of them, pigments can be added to help identify the natural structure of the tree.

2. Opaque – these are paints on solvents (perchlorovinyl, polyurethane, oil, alkyd, acrylic), as well as acrylic water-dispersion paints.

The most popular are polyurethane, alkyd and acrylic paints, since they provide a fairly high quality coating and are easy to apply.

By the way, the paint has one more advantage: the floor can be made of any color. For example, look at the variety of colors in the Benjamin Moore.

We use only high-quality and very beautiful materials in our work.

Protective impregnation: what to prefer?

Impregnation performs bio- and fire-protective functions. Simply put, it saturates the tree with substances that protect it from destruction by fire and pests. Professionals always make special wood processing.

The following types of impregnations exist:

1. Fire retardants reduce fire hazard, protect the wood material it ignites. Such impregnations may be needed in public and industrial premises.

2. Biocides, antiseptics protect against the effects of insects, fungus and mold, increase the service life of the wooden floor. These impregnations can be superficial and deep.

It should be remembered that at home, only superficial impregnations will be useful. Apply by spray or brush on dried and cleaned wood. You can do this by yourself.

In industrial premises, deep impregnations are often used, with which boards are processed with the use of complex machinery to ensure the maximum possible treatment of all wood.

3. Oil impregnation. They are made of wood oil and linen, as well as modified natural resins and are used both for strengthening and protecting, and for toning floors from wood.

The oil absorbs into the wood much deeper than the varnish. As a result, the floor surface is substantially strengthened, becomes moisture resistant, acquires a silky shine.

First of all, It is better to choose oils that do not contain solvents. Give preference to natural, not very fast drying oil.

It is best to apply impregnation in the places where most walk – in the living room or corridor. In addition, such impregnation is suitable for premises that are not heated.

Advice. Before impregnating with oil, the floor needs to be cleaned, sanded and dried.

Varnish or paint?

Usually for wooden floors, if they choose lacquers, they are alkyd, they are the most durable. But they are not covered with varnishes infrequently, as they are unable to fully protect the tree from mechanical damage.

You can save the tree structure. Very beautiful!

In addition, for residential premises only lacquers made without inclusion of caustic solvents are suitable.

And what about the paint? The paint for use in a dwelling should be chosen, first of all, according to the principle of its ecological compatibility.

In this regard, the ideal option – water-dispersion paints that do not contain organic solvents. They are water resistant, perfectly laid on the surface and do not lose color.

We advise, for kitchen and bathroom floors use acrylic paint (waterproof). The optimum option for wood, therefore,  is alkyd paint.

Advice. Carefully read the information printed on the paint bank. Then you can correctly calculate how much paint is needed for painting the wooden floor.

Before starting the repair, remember that all work has to be done step by step. This also applies to floor painting.

  1. Clean the floor of dirt, grease and dust, thoroughly dry.
  2. Plaster all the cracks before drying.
  3. Sand and clean thoroughly.
  4. Apply antiseptic or primer, wait until it dries.
  5. Apply the chosen paint or varnish.

Advice. The top layer of any coating is applied not earlier than the lower one will dry.

Application of varnish

Application of varnish. We put the first layer of varnish, let it dry well. Remove all irregularities with a thin skin and apply the next layer, wait for it to dry.

In our opinion, the best option — the application of varnish in three layers. Especially relevant, always wear a face shield during operation.

Application of paint. This can be done in 3 ways:

Method 1. You need to pre-coat the floor with a drying oil or a primer and dry it for 3 days. Then you can apply a coat of paint, wait for drying, apply a second layer, dry it for 4-7 days.

Method 2. Putty with oil into the tone of the paint. Cracks and other defects in the boards align. The floor is treated with a fine sandpaper, then plastered, then again leveled with a sandpaper. Do this until the putty stops appearing. Apply two or three coats of paint.
